When you’re moving temperature-sensitive pharmaceutical product, the margin for error is ultimately measured in compliance. Most pharmaceutical products require a stable window of 15–25°C throughout transit. Step outside that window for too long, and you’re not just risking a failed shipment; you’re risking product efficacy for the user, regulatory exposure, and a customer relationship.
To put this to the test, we ran two real shipments side by side: one on a standard reefer truck, and one using our temperature-controlled container. The results make the case better than we could in words alone.
Test 1: The Standard Truck
For a 3-day period we monitored a shipment handled by a carrier offering ambient temperature in a reefer and this told a cautionary tale.
For the first day and a half, temperatures held in a reasonable 18–21°C band. Then, early on April 22 the temperature fell off a cliff, dropping well below the 15°C floor and bottoming out at -0.7°C. It hovered in the single digits and near-freezing range for roughly two full days, briefly recovering before dipping again, and only returned to a safe range late on April 24.
That’s not a brief blip. That’s a multi-day cold excursion, well outside the product’s required range, on a shipment with no active temperature control.
Test 2: BBE’s Temperature Controlled Unit
We ran the same comparison using our temperature-controlled unit over a three-day window (May 6-9).
Across the entire monitoring period, temperature stayed between 18.6°C and 21.3°C and comfortably inside the required 15–25°C range, with no excursions above or below spec at any point.
A quick note on reading this chart: at first glance it looks more “jumpy” than the truck chart above. That’s because this graph’s Y-axis is zoomed in to a narrow ~3°C band (18.3–21.6°C) to show the fine detail of in-range fluctuation, while the truck chart spans a much wider ~26°C range. The numbers that matter, min and max, never left the acceptable range.
The Real Comparison

The truck spent a significant portion of transit outside the safe range, including extended time near or below freezing. The temperature-controlled unit held steady, in spec, for the entire journey!
Why It Matters
A temperature excursion isn’t just a data point on a graph, it’s a risk to product potency, a potential compliance issue under Good Distribution Practice (GDP) requirements, and, ultimately, a risk to patient outcomes. Most carriers offering ambient service operate with a “set it and forget it” approach: the reefer is set to an ambient range, but that setting alone does not guarantee your freight will actually travel within that range. Equipment issues, loading dock delays, limited monitoring technology, weather exposure, and route conditions can all introduce risk and leave freight vulnerable to temperature fluctuations. A temperature-controlled unit removes that variable entirely.
