From Impossible to Airborne: An Oversized Cargo Success Story

In complex logistics, there is a significant difference between providing a freight quote and developing a freight solution.

When a customer needed to move critical, oversized equipment from Europe to Western Canada, several freight forwarders were approached. However, the shipment’s original packaging made it too tall for conventional commercial air freight, and no straightforward transportation option was available.

The equipment was high-value, project-critical, and required in Canada according to a tightly coordinated installation schedule.

The customer had already approached multiple freight forwarders, but no one had provided a viable transportation plan. In its existing configuration, the cargo was simply too large.

Engineering the Freight Before Moving It 

The first critical step was not booking an aircraft. It was collaboration.

BBE coordinated directly with the equipment engineers in Europe to determine whether the packaging could be safely modified without compromising the cargo. Through detailed discussions and careful dimensional planning, the shipment’s overall height was reduced by approximately three inches.

Three inches separated cargo that could not move by commercial air from cargo that could.

Securing a Specialized Air Freight Solution 

Reducing the shipment’s height made air transportation possible, but the available options remained extremely limited.

The cargo required a specialized nose-loading freighter capable of accommodating its dimensions. This was the type of shipment suited to a factory-built Boeing 747 freighter rather than a standard wide-body freighter or a passenger aircraft converted for cargo.

The key advantage was the 747 freighter’s upward-swinging nose door, which created a straight-in loading path onto the main deck. For long, tall, or awkward cargo, that distinction mattered. The freight did not need to be angled through a side door or manoeuvred around a door frame, reducing handling complexity and making an otherwise difficult oversized cargo movement possible.

BBE identified a suitable aircraft operating a fixed weekly service from Luxembourg to Calgary. However, the schedule created a narrow execution window.

Missing the flight could have significantly delayed the shipment and disrupted the customer’s installation schedule. The installation team was already preparing to travel to Edmonton, Canada, placing additional pressure on the cargo to arrive as planned.

BBE coordinated every stage of the international air freight movement around the fixed departure:

Delays during customs clearance, cargo recovery, or final-mile dispatch can quickly undermine an otherwise successful international shipment.

BBE had a dedicated hot-shot low-boy flat deck positioned and ready at the airport before the cargo was released. Within approximately one hour of customs clearance, the equipment was loaded and travelling to its final destination in Nisku, Alberta.

There were no missed handoffs and no unnecessary delays between the airport and the delivery location.

The equipment arrived in time to support the customer’s installation plan.

Expedited Logistics Is About More Than Speed 

Expedited shipping is often described as simply moving freight faster. In practice, true expedited logistics is about controlling uncertainty.
